The Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers

These are the results of previous competitions, for those fascinated by such things.

The 8 bell Striking Competition, for the Penn Trophy

No more than five (six as from 2019) members of one tower may form part of the band for this competition. The results are therefore by branch.

The 8 bell striking competition has taken place on AGM day since 2001. From 1981 to 2000 a date in May was used. The inaugural competition in 1980 was held on the same day as the six bell competition in September. Prior to this a one off competition using different rules and involving heats for Triples and Major bands was held in the year of the Association's centenary, 1978, on the day of the AGM. There was no competition in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the same reason the 2021 competition took place online using Ringing Room and was also delayed from AGM day due to the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. CB = Chairman's Baldric: awarded to the second placed band since 2013. SC = Sabin Clapper: awarded to the third placed band.

Regrettably not all of the results are available. If any member can help with filling in the gaps please contact the webmaster.

The 6 bell Striking Competition, for the Croome Trophy

This competition is entered by the winners of the Branch striking competitions. The tower and branch are therefore identified. RMC = Ringing Master's Clapper, awarded for meritorious performances. From 1987-89 the clapper was automatically awarded to the second placed band. There are two of these as from 1998. GPT = Great Peter Trophy: awarded to the third placed band in 2011-2012, since 2013 this has been awarded to the second placed band. LPT = Littledean and Purton Trophy: awarded to the second placed band in 2011-2012, since 2013 it has been awarded to the runner up in the Tower of the Year competition, and since 2020 to the runner up of the Achievement of the Year competition. CB = Chairman's Baldric: awarded to the fourth placed band in 2011-2012, it is now awarded to the second placed band in the Penn Trophy competition.

2001 was the first year when the 6 bell striking competition took place on AGM day. Prior to this, and from its inauguration in 1968 a date in September or early October was used. There were no competitions in 2000 due to the petrol crisis and in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition the 2021 competition took place online using Ringing Room and on a date in May because the AGM clashed with the funeral of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

These results are almost complete; many thanks are due to Frank Byrne for collecting the data which first appeared in the 2000 Annual Report.

The Young Persons' Striking Competition, for the Nibley Trophy

No member of any of the bands may be older than 19 on the day of the competition. BT = Barnwood Trophy, awarded to the highest placed band with the most ringers from one tower. This trophy was first awarded in 2008. The competition was held for the first time in 2004, hence the lack of history.
